Hong Kong a dream

D’après Freud, le rêve est indispensable à la vie, encore plus que le sommeil profond. Il se déguise pour révéler nos désirs les plus profonds (le contenu latent de notre inconscient).
La vidéo projette à la fois un désir et une angoisse. Les images d’un lieu visité (Hong Kong) se mélangent à des photographies sensuelles d’un corps perçu furtivement au cours de la vidéo.
Les mouvements répétitifs, la superposition, le double de la même expérience nous renvoient à un espace sans fin qui se termine par un sentiment de soulagement.

Olympiades by Alejandro Elias Garcia Marta

One day walking around the city of Paris, I encountered, by chance, a buildscape called Olympiades.
This space of perfect architectural control and illusionary rendering of an ideal society, created a theatrical, almost surreal experience that could be seen as a mixture of « Blade Runner » and « Metropolis » taken to a point of climax.

Le droit à la ville

Small quote from the book Le droit à la ville by Henri Lefebvre, recently re-edited in french:

« Cet écrit aura une forme offensive (que certains jugeront peut-être offensante). Pourquoi?

Parce que vraisemblablement chaque lecteur aura déjà en tête un ensemble d’idées systématisées ou en voie de systématisation. Vraisemblablement, chaque lecteur cherche « un système » ou a trouvé son « système ». Le Système est à la mode, tant dans la pensée que dans les terminologies et le langage.

Or tout système tend à clore la réflexion, à fermer l’horizon. Cet écrit veut briser les systèmes, non pour leur subsister un autre système mais pour ouvrir la pensée et l’action vers des possibilités en montrant l’horizon et la route. Contre une forme de réflexion qui tend vers le formalisme, une pensée qui tend vers l’ouverture mène son combat.

Ce petit livre ne se propose pas seulement de passer au crible de la critique les pensées et les activités qui concernent l’urbanisme. Il a pour objectif de faire entrer ces problèmes dans la conscience et dans les programmes politiques. »

from edge to border - a concrete landscape

from edge to border - a concrete landscape is a project realized by Alejandro Elias Garcia Marta in TU Delft for his Msc theses (urbanism: spacelab, architecture: border condition) in 2008. It takes place in Istanbul (Turkey).

The starting inquiry revolves around the question on how to visualize and conceptualize urban processes? How can we go to an unknown city, without a pre-given idea of the actual urban field, and produce an insightful observation about the forces operating in space? Thus, a conscious rejection of preconceived ideas about the city of Istanbul was the first starting condition of the research leading to the question of how spatial strategies and tactics get perform around the territorial movement structures of the city? What do they produce? How can we represent such a non-linear series of events?

As a start, I am going to present an urban project called Maine-Montparnasse re-assembling a metropolitan centrality. The main subject of the project was to discover the site of Montparnasse in Paris (France) as a field of actions in opposition of what the French government (Atelier Parisien d’Urbanisme APUR) calls a ZAC (zone d’aménagement concerté).

This blog was created to expose series of different projects with an ambition in mind: create a critical and political thinking about architecture, urbanism and - in a greater extent - about the question of space. The idea is not to define a precise notion of what architecture or urbanism are but, through different kinds of works (from essays, comments to exhibitions of architectural projects or art works), to grasp an idea of space that tries to open and ask questions rather than gives answers. The notion of space will be questioned in various aspects to push further and further the presets of the architectural thinking. All this seems to be ambitious but I hope that bit by bit this blog will unfold, through the accumulation and variety of work, to a dense and meaningful research platform.
As usual, the start might get a little confusing but I hope to redefine more precisely the idea of the research through the projects. There are so many subjects that I hope to cover in this « space-diary» that I do not want to confine myself in any kind of theoretical point of view that might be not precise or pertinent yet.
I hope that this is the beginning of a nice adventure…
